[dcphp-dev] [job] Full Stack PHP developer in DC area - Healthy Building Network (not-for-profit)

Full Stack Web Developer

The Healthy Building Network was founded in 2000 to reduce the use of hazardous chemicals in building products as a means of improving human health and the
environment.  We focus on building products for two reasons:

 First, the US EPA estimates that Americans spend as much as 90% of their time indoors, and can be exposed to unhealthy chemicals there at much greater concentrations than outdoors.

 Second, the volumes of building products are so great – in excess of 3 billion pounds produced annually – that reducing the use of hazardous materials not only benefits the people who build, maintain and occupy buildings, but also the manufacturing sites and communities from which the materials come, and the dumps, incinerators or recycling facilities to which they are sent after their useful life.

There are numerous examples – removing lead from paint, arsenic from pressure treated wood, and formaldehyde from particleboard – of how reducing the use of hazardous chemicals in our building products can improve the quality of our lives and our environment onfrom the local to the global scale.

We are a small non-profit with a large impact!

You would be our third in-house developer. We currently have three (3) legacy projects and two (2) new projects that focus on identifying and eliminating chemical hazards from building materials and the built environment, as well as keeping fence line communities safe where these products are manufactured.

As for work style, we are a Basecamp (37 Signals) type setup.  HBN's main office is in DC, although more than half of the staff Most of us work from remote offices around the country in various time zones and depend on online tools for our virtual office.  We use our own take on Agile to stay on track.  We also manage consulting work and  and work collaborate with clients and outside organizations through the this using the Agile perspective.

  • Skills & Requirements

  • Must have:

  • MVC PHP framework experience (Our legacy systems use Zend Framework 1+2, our new projects are built on Symfony2 and Laravel5)

  • Comfortable with JS

  • Very familiar with developing with GIT

  • An appreciation for instituting TDD practices

  • Working social skills

  • Motivation to work from home or a shared office space if not in DC or Southern VT  - In DC we are just North of Dupont Circle.

  • Nice to have:

  • Any front-end framework experience (we use Bootstrap, plan to use Angular)

  • PHP Testing experience (PHPUnit, Behat, PHPSpec)

Dear sangha-memnbers,

We periodically organizine group volunteer events, and a few months ago, I mentioned an upcoming event in April with the Anacostia Watershed Society.  Every year the Anacostia Watershed Society organizes a multi-site river clean-up for Earth Day.  This year the event is one April 25 and the clean up occurs between 9 am and noon.  Here's a link with more info:  http://www.anacostiaws.org/earthday2015/

I'd like to organize a group from our sangha, and I'll need to get an approximate idea of how many people would participate and which location would work best for the interested people.  If you are interested in participating, please send me an email and let me know if you have a car or if you are tied to public transportation.

Many thanks!  Amy

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Potluck this Sunday at 6pm IMCW Meditation Class

Dear sangha friends,

I hope you are staying warm and have had some time outside these past couple days (enjoying the snow in addition to or instead of shoveling!).

This Sunday after our usual mediation period at the Church of the Holy City and a talk from Hugh Byrne, we will have a potluck dinner. Please bring something vegetarian to share and a plate and utensils to minimize waste.

Hope to see you there!

With metta,

Rebecca

I know MySQL isn't the new hotness or necessarily web scale, but his
even might be of interest if you want to see the new features in 5.7

As far as I can tell, it's free but space is limited.

[dcphp-dev] [Job] Web Developer & Sys Admin

Hi,

We're growing our team that works on-site at the Naval Research Laboratory.  We're looking to add a mid-level PHP developer and a jr. sys admin.  It's an environment that allows technical staff a great deal of autonomy in what technologies to use and how they solve problems.  Learning new things is highly encouraged.  You'll be supporting some sharp researchers doing work in everything from AI and robotics to nano-science to physics to materials science.

Web Developer - Develop custom applications to support the internal processes of this 5000 person research institution. Most things are built on the LAMP stack.  Experience with Yii (1 or 2) and/or AngularJS is a plus.

Sys Admin - Design, install, maintain, troubleshoot, and tune heterogeneous systems and complex networks which provide web services.  Experience with VMs is a plus.

These positions will require a security clearance.  It would be great if you already have one.  If you don't but think that you're trustworthy, then we should talk.  If you have a fondness for illegal activities or a desire for violent over-though of the government just delete this email now.

Great compensation plus a full benefits package (health, dental, vision, 401k, holidays, paid vacation, life insurance, short-term disability, tuition assistance and more)

You'd be working with smart, personable people in an environment with flexible schedules and casual attire.

Email me directly if you have any interest or questions.

Thanks,
Steve
