Unfolding the Lotus
With Shawn Shafner

But did you know that the lotus is revered in Buddhism and many East Asian traditions for representing purity, resilience and enlightenment? Join the Downtown Dharma community and meditation teacher Shawn Shafner for a chance to enjoy sitting peacefully together, walking mindfully through the gardens, learning about the lotus flower's importance in the Buddhist tradition, and discussing its relevance to our own life. No mindfulness experience necessary!

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] This Sunday at Downtown Dharma: A Heart as Wide as the World

Greetings Dear Sangha,

This Sunday we'll return to a classic Dharma teaching that comes, as so many do, in the form of a list. The Brahmaviharas—loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity—are often introduced as heart practices, but they are equally profound expressions of wisdom. Drawn by the depth and radiance they offer, I find myself returning to them again and again in my own practice and equally to offer them here. In Sunday's meeting, we'll explore how these "Divine Abodes" both arise from and support deep insight, revealing a dynamic interplay between the affective and cognitive dimensions of the path. While readily accessible and a beautiful point of entry, the Brahmaviharas are boundless and can themselves be pursued as profound paths of awakening.

I hope you'll join us for practicing together and exploring one of the gems of the Dharma.

In-person: Sunday, 7:00 to 8:30pm @ Yoga District — 1910 14th Street NW, 3rd Floor, Washington, DC

Online via Zoom:  Join here

A reminder if you're joining us in person: please arrive at least 10 minutes early as the line to check in can be long. There are plenty of friends to make while you're waiting for the formal program to begin.

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Mindfulness/NVC for teenagers (seeking classes but also willing to create something together)

Hello fellow meditators,

As a stepparent to a boy who recently turned 14, I'm looking for workshops and opportunities to help him develop mindfulness, emotional intelligence, self-compassion, and introspection, and learn healthy relational skills (non-violent communication, authentic relating, etc.).

Have you heard of such classes/programs for teenagers in the DC area?

Or, potentially, would some of you be willing to facilitate such classes for teenagers if I could help you organize and do the outreach among parents I know, in the communities I'm connected with? Or maybe you are a parent of a teenager or know some families who could benefit from such classes?

Let's talk :)

Sincerely,
Karim

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Radical Receptivity: Listening as a Sacred Act

Dear friends,

This Sunday, we'll explore the Insight Dialogue guideline Listen Deeply. Michele Bledsoe, a teacher with the Center for Mindful Living, will offer the dharma reflection, and I'll guide our relational practice.

To be received with full attention—free from judgment or agenda—is a rare and sacred experience. Fortunately, offering this kind of presence is something we can cultivate. We'll orient towards listening with the whole body—not to get it "right," but to discover what's possible when we meet each other with presence.

The evening will include a guided meditation, brief dharma talk, and Insight Dialogue practice in pairs.

No prior experience is necessary—just a spirit of kindness and curiosity!

With love,
Vince

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] [Downtown Dharma Listserv] Tomorrow evening: What mindfulness practice means to me after 14 years

Hi all,

We have a community-led Sangha this Sunday evening which I look forward to facilitating. We will meditate for ~30 minutes, and then I plan to give a talk on how meditation and Buddhist practice has affected my life since discovering it 14 years ago, and the ups and downs I've experienced over that period.

I chose this topic because each of us is independently developing our own relationship with this practice and these teachings, and in the past I've found it interesting to hear from other Sangha members to learn about where they are on the path, and what challenges or benefits they've experienced, to get a sense of how this might relate to my own practice.

We start at 7pm sharp and will end by 8:30pm. Looking forward to seeing you there:

Best,
Nate

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Follow-up from Sunday Evening -- The Dharma of Joanna Macy

Dear Sangha,

Thank you for your heartfelt presence and shared inquiry during our time together on Sunday. I hope you got a sense of the magnitude of Joanna Macy's wild and wonderful contribution to our world.

As promised, here are a few resources that, should you want to dive deeper into The Work that Reconnects, can get you started. May they nourish your own path as we move through this complex time:

Two quotes from Joanna:

The heart that breaks open can contain the whole universe.

To be alive in this beautiful, self-organizing universe -- to participate in the dance of life with senses to perceive it, lungs that breathe it, organs that draw nourishment from it -- is a wonder beyond words.

And finally, her translation of Rilke's "I Live My Life In Widening Circles":

I live my life in widening circles
that reach out across the world.
I may not complete this last one
but I give myself to it.
I circle around God, around the primordial tower.
I've been circling for thousands of years
and I still don't know: am I a falcon,
a storm, or a great song?

With gratitude and reverence,
Kristin

Joanna Macy, sensing both the weight and possibility in such suffering, developed The Work that Reconnects. Rooted in Dharma, deep ecology, and systems theory, this Work is beloved around the world as a way to approach and transform our conditions. The methodical framework and set of practices have freed up my own heart countless times and brought new dimensions to my understanding of the Dharma's radical potential for our changing world. Just last month, I had the opportunity to visit Joanna, now 96 (!), in her home in Berkeley, California. Once again, just with her way of being, she blew my mind and thrilled my heart.

After a fall on June 16, Joanna entered hospice last week. In honor of her extraordinary legacy, we'll explore just a few of the gifts that have emerged from Joanna Macy's Dharma. I hope you'll join us for this evening of reflection, gratitude, and reconnection.

This drop-in series will meet on the second Saturday of each month, with each session exploring one of the six Insight Dialogue guidelines. We're starting with Pause, the foundation for all the others.

If you're drawn to the rich insights of relational meditation, want a clearer understanding of the Insight Dialogue framework, or Sundays aren't always convenient for you, this Saturday AM series may be a lovely fit.

This Sunday June 26 I'll be guiding our lovely community through a mashup of the ancient wisdom of Buddhism with the modern practice of Authentic Relating. I doubt this remix will land on a Spotify playlist anytime soon, but I think it'll be a good time. ๐Ÿคท

Authentic Relating is a kind of interpersonal meditation. For those who have joined the monthly Insight Dialogue practice, it's similar but with more secular roots and tends to be a bit more playful/edgy. It's a practice that invites us to show up fully—warts and all—and to experience how deeply we're connected to one another.

This feels a bit vulnerable to admit, but I know far less about Buddhism than many of our IMCW teachers and hope to not pretend to know more than I do. But I've found so much joy in both Buddhist teachers and experiencing and facilitating authentic relating practice I can't wait to share!

Be well,

Alex
