[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] from last night: book, podcast, and future Circling opportunities

Dear friends,

It was wonderful to see everyone who attended last night. I wanted to share a few references from my talk:

-- the book I mentioned on the Five Wisdom Emotions is called Spectrum of Ecstasy
-- the quotes about the attachment system, attentional system, and self system were from an interview with John Churchill, "Attunement as World Medicine," on the Emerge podcast

And for those who may want to participate in future events I'm leading, you can join my list at Future Vessel

Please feel free to reach out to me with feedback, notes about your experience, or just to say hello.

May you have a beautiful fall!

Warmly,
Dechen // Ellen

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Sunday evening: Your interpersonal hangups as a path to insight

Dear Downtown Dharma Community,

I'm very happy to be returning to lead the sangha this Sunday, September 28 from 7-8:30pm.

With a gentle sense of humor, I'm calling this evening From Cringe to Liberation: Using Your Interpersonal Hangups as a Path to Insight.

Buddhism teaches that our everyday suffering is rooted in a mistaken perception that we are some kind of "fixed self." Nowhere does this fixed self become more obvious than in the interpersonal realm. Our experience of reality is often profoundly shaped by the habitual ways we see ourselves and others -- and everyone's conditioning is different. In Western psychological terms, we might call this our "attachment stuff;" in Buddhist terms, we might call these samskaras. When we experience anxiety, awkwardness, cringe, and "ick", it can be a beautiful opportunity for insight into these fixed patterns of perception.

The meditation, talk, and participatory exercises will draw from my experience as a Circling leader and a student of Buddhism. I hope it will be a fun and insightful evening that helps you illuminate playful ways to shift your conditioned habits of perceiving and relating!

See you then,
Dechen // Ellen

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] FYI: IMCW affinity groups

Hi all,

Wanted to let you know that in addition to our Downtown Dharma community, IMCW has some great affinity groups you can join, including BIPOC, API, Latinx, disabilities/Deafness, chronic illness, LGBTQIA+, seniors, vegans, young adults, families, and women.

Personally I've been involved with the LGBTQIA+ sangha for years and would be happy to talk about that one with anyone who's interested!

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Can you host reading group in Dec?

Hi all,

As the reading group organizer, I've been in touch with some of you about logistics. Thanks to those who've talked to me so far.

I am now looking for a host, centrally located in DC, who can host 15+ people, and whose place is available Fri 12/13 or Sat 12/14. This will be for a discussion facilitated by Jackie and Patrick.

If you can do this, please reply to me individually.

After getting this one arranged, I'll schedule more sessions in the fall, so watch this space!

Thanks!

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Downtown Dharma: Insight Dialogue Practice This Sunday

Dear Friends,

Vince Lampone and I will be co-facilitating an Insight Dialogue session this Sunday, and we hope you can join us.  We are going to be exploring how giving and receiving generosity from one another helps to reduce our suffering and reminds us that we are all interconnected.

No prior Insight Dialogue experience is necessary, just your presence and your openness to listening closely and speaking with intention with a practice partner.  In case this is your first time encountering Insight Dialogue practice, please expect some participatory conversation as we play with the six ID guidelines of: pause; relax; open; attune to emergence; listen deeply; and speak deeply.

We'll start with a short silent guided meditation, after which we'll break into dyads or triads for relational practice.

We hope to see you there—online or in person!

• In-person: Sunday, September 15th, 7-8:30pm @ Yoga District — 1910 14th Street NW, 3rd Floor, Washington, DC (please arrive 5-10 minutes early)

• Online via Zoom: zoom.us/j/466237117?pwd=cGxHaTJlTVhBdldVSk8weDZuSW5udz0

Warmly,

Maura Flanagan

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Tonight: Why Buddhism?

Greetings Dear Sangha,

As a group of people in the DC area and online, we come together every Sunday evening to collectively explore the wisdom and practices of the Buddha. But why that last part? What is it, in particular, about a set of teachings 2,600 years old that could possibly be relevant in 2024? Amid social polarization, climate crisis, and of course the everyday stresses of our daily lives, why give your time and attention to this?

This evening, we'll explore the fundamental cornerstones that, in my mind, make these teachings so uniquely helpful to us, individually and collectively, today.

I hope you can join us this evening from 7 to 8:30pm for the development of our practice, wisdom, and community.
With love and gratitude,
Kristin

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Interested in fall reading groups?

Hi all,

Downtown Dharma typically has a meditation/Buddhist-themed reading group and potluck every month. This is a wonderful chance to deepen connections and explore ideas outside the Sunday sits. Recent topics have included anxiety, bodhisattvas, nonviolent communication, and eco-Buddhism. Future topics could be whatever you want!

For a reading group to happen:
* Someone needs to volunteer to host a group of ~10 people for a talk and potluck;
* and someone (could be the same or a different person) needs to volunteer to facilitate the group. Facilitating involves choosing reading(s) (could be a book, article, video, podcast, etc.) and leading a discussion.

If either of these sound like something you'd like to do this fall, please let me know!

With metta,
Ava Morgenstern

This Sunday's session will focus on dealing with strong emotions using the analogy of a tree in a storm. We will practice mindful breathing, which involves focusing on the rise and fall of the abdomen to stay calm during emotional challenges. The main message is that just like storms, emotions are temporary and will pass if we stay centered and aware. Through mindfulness practice, we can build the confidence to handle tough times without feeling overwhelmed by our thoughts and feelings.

  • In my dharma share, I'll explore this question: How can I stay calm in strong emotions and believe that my feelings are temporary and will go away?
