MOLC - Summer 2021 Updates

July 12, 2021

Welcome to Summer!

Welcome to the lazy, hazy days of summer.  Or we hope that is how it goes for you.

Mission of Love Charities is still going full steam. In fact, even though some of our services were curtailed during the pandemic shutdown, we continued providing basic needs to people who needed food and financial assistance for housing and utility costs.  We are gradually gearing up to help a limited number of people who need access to showers and laundry.  We accept clean clothing donations and unupholstered furniture.

Meanwhile, we are in full preparation mode for our Workforce Development, Education and Job Training programs that will begin in mid-August. While providing people with basic needs to sustain their daily lives is still a priority, the Mission recognizes that people need to get job training and other education so they can get back to employment and get back on their feet economically.  The pandemic was devastating to many individuals and families who were living on the margin economically.  The Mission’s job training and education programs will provide the support needed for these people to get back to being self-sustaining.

Back to School is not all that far off – the children will be back in the classrooms in late August and early September.  Mission of Love Charities will hold its annual Back-To-School event on August 21, 2021, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. when the Mission will distribute free backpacks loaded with lots of school supplies.

The Mission is pressing ahead with plans to develop, renovate and rebuild the old school building across the street to become the Mission’s new facility.  While the Mission has attracted significant funding to support the design and construction of the new facility, it still has a ways to go to secure the financial support it needs to complete the project, which has a tentative completion date of late 2022. But the prospect of the new and expanded space is giving us all lots of energy and enthusiasm with the prospect of being able to do so much more for the community.

Get Vaccinated! On Saturday, July 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Mission of Love Charities will partner with Prince George’s County to provide free vaccinations for people to become immune to the Covid. The event will be outside in the Mission parking lot at 6180 Old Central Avenue.  Children ages 12-17 are welcome if they come with a parent or guardian.  Walk-ups are welcome, but preregistration is recommended.  Click here to pre-register.

Mental Health Counseling will be provided to people who stop by Mission of Love Charities on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  DXT Therapeutic Services, a mental health agency, will be on hand to provide help, guidance and therapy for adults, adolescents and children.  People who have concerns about an array of behavioral and mental health issues are encouraged to come by and talk to the professionals from DXT Therapeutics Services.

Of course, Mission of Love Charities, while keeping all these and other services going to help people non-stop, still needs and welcomes financial support.  If you are able, please consider making a donation here.

Best wishes for a very happy Summer!

Sincerely,

Deborah Martinez
