We are honored to present, via zoom, a conversation with Bhante Gunaratana , the abbot of the Bhavana Society. Born in rural Sri Lanka, he has been a monk since age 12 and took full ordination at age 20 in 1947. Bhante Gunaratana is an internationally recognized author and meditation teacher. Prior to coming to the United States, he spent five years doing in missionary work with the Harijanas (Untouchables) of India and ten years in Malaysia. He has taught in a number of settings, including the Buddhist Vihara of Washington D.C. where he served as president, the American University in Washington D.C. where he served as Buddhist chaplain and also earned a Ph.D. in philosophy, and at meditation centers worldwide. Bhante G has a strong scholarly background and lifelong commitment to dhamma. Bhante G, who is 93, continues to write books and articles, lead retreats, and teach at the Bhavana Society. On the occasion of his 90th birthday, December 7th, 2017, Bhante G decided that he would no longer accept invitations that require long-distance travel.

About St. Mark's Meditation Center The St. Mark's Meditation Center is a partnership of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and the Insight Meditation Community of Washington. We endeavor to create a peaceful presence in the world, based on compassionate action, loving kindness, and mindfulness. It is a place where we may be strengthened for service to others and to the world. St. Mark's Meditation is held each Monday evening at 7:30 pm in the Adams Room of the church. To find the room from the church entrance, take the stairs or elevator down one floor and follow the hallway toward the exit door. The Adams Room will be on your right, at the end of a short hallway. We begin with a half-hour, lightly-guided meditation, followed by a Dhamma talk and group discussion. We end by 9:00 pm at the latest. New attendees are encouraged to drop-in between 7:15 and 7:25 to meet with regular attendees for informal conversations and questions about the sangha (our meditation community) and/or practice. No RSVPs or prior notice required. Supporting St. Mark's Meditation Center In the Buddhist tradition the teachings are considered priceless. They are offered freely, and members have the opportunity to offer voluntary donations, or dāna. Dāna is the ancient Pali word for "spontaneous generosity of the heart." This tradition also encourages cultivating generosity. Your donation supports St. Mark's, the Insight Meditation Community of Washington, and the teachers in all the ways they serve. Your generosity also ensures no one will be denied access to these teachings and practices. Staying in Touch We welcome dialogue between members. You can also feel free to suggest topics for Monday Nights. Please be in touch with our teachers if you have questions about your practice or would like to learn more. Brian can be reached at brian.chamowitz@gmail.com. Volunteer and Service Opportunities Do you know of a volunteer or service opportunity to take our learning off the cushion and into the community? Please pass on suggestions to brian.chamowitz@gmail.com. | | | | | | | Copyright © 2013. All Rights Reserved.
