Mindfulness of the body - it's the first foundation of mindfulness, and a powerful place to find refuge in a busy life. Yet for many of us, embodied presence can be elusive!

This week, we'll use social meditation to explore this pillar of the path. Taking advantage of the power of community, we'll engage in a pair of interactive practices to connect with the simple, embodied knowing that's possible through the sense doors.

Hi all,

The next meeting of the Downtown Dharma reading group will be on Saturday, September 18th at 6-7:30pm. We will be reading The Book of Joy, a conversation between the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu. The book is split into three sections, and we will be reading the first section, "The Nature of True Joy" (p. 1-67). We plan on having a free-flowing discussion after a few opening thoughts/questions.

We will be doing a hybrid in-person/Zoom meeting. We ask that participants only join in person if they have been fully vaccinated. The meeting will be held at my intentional community, Maitri House.

Date/Time: Saturday, 9/18, 6-7:30pm
Address: 251 Manor Circle, Takoma Park, MD 20912. You are welcome to read more about Maitri House here, including the note about accessibility.
People are welcome to stick around for an optional group dinner afterwards.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Class this Sunday: Why Friendship Is Awesome

Hi friends!

"No, Ananda," the Buddha told Ananda, "having good friends isn't half of the Holy Life. Having good friends is the whole of the Holy Life."

Friendship is awesome. But, what does spiritual friendship look like? Why is it important on the spiritual path? If meditation is a solitary act, why does friendship matter for our spiritual lives?

This Sunday, we will explore these questions together on Zoom from 7:00pm - 8:30pm. Luke Horvath and I will be co-teaching this class, and we are both excited to talk to you and hear from you on the topic of spiritual friendship. As usual, we will start with a meditation, then have a talk and discussion.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Class this Sunday

Dear friends,

We will be meeting this Sunday, virtually, to connect, meditate and explore the dharma together. The plan had been to meet in person, but unfortunately the yoga studio where we planned to meet told us today that they need a higher rent than we can afford to pay. We are sorry to deliver the news on such short notice. Until today it seemed quite possible that things would work out. If you have any suggestions or leads on spaces your input would be greatly appreciated.

Apropos of our current situation, we will explore the concept of intention as it relates to our lives in community. Travis and I will be co-teaching together and we look forward to seeing you.
