[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] An article related to next Sunday's meditation

Dear Friends,

I'm looking forward to sharing with you at this Sunday's meditation gathering on the theme of Upright Sitting & Beginner's Mind.

If you are interested in a preview, I just published an article today, Practice to become your true self, that draws on the teachings of somatic educator Moshe Feldenkrais (my lineage) and Zen master Shunryu Suzuki, author of Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind. It also includes two videos that will give you a head start on the sitting posture work we'll do together.

It's a substantial article, so I wanted to share it with you in advance in case you are interested in looking at it before Sunday.

Warmly,
Seth Dellinger

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] This Sunday: Truthfulness and the Mind in Motion

Hi friends,

This Sunday, I’ll be joined by Robert Rhyne, lay teacher at the Washington Buddhist Vihara, for an evening of Insight Dialogue exploring truthfulness.

Together we’ll slow things down and notice the mind in motion: wanting comfort, wanting approval, rehearsing what to say next, resisting awkwardness, trying to sound wise, hoping the room temperature changes — you know, the usual human experience.

In Buddhist practice, these movements aren’t something to judge or suppress. The invitation is to know them truthfully, with kindness and even amusement.

We hope you will join us!
  • In-person: Sunday, 7:00 to 8:30pm @ Yoga District — 1910 14th Street NW, 3rd Floor, Washington, DC

  • Online via Zoom:  Join here

With love,

Vince

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Free Mindfulness Meditation Class Series: Back to the Basics, Back to the Heart

Good Evening Dear Sangha,

Some of you may know me as the facilitator for CML’s monthly Dharma Contemplation Class, and others may know me as a facilitator of Insight Dialogue.  I wanted to warmly invite you to a new four week online class series I will be teaching through CML on Mindfulness Meditation.  These sessions are free and are part of my practicum to receive my certification through the Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program (MMTCP).  I hope you can join me.  Additional details can be found below.

With Metta,

Maura Flanagan

DETAILS:

Join Maura Flanagan as she offers a 4-week class series, "Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation -- Back to the Basics, Back to the Heart" from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. No experience is necessary, and a beginner's mind is welcome!

This class will meet on 4 successive Monday evenings for 90 minutes, starting June 1st and concluding on June 22nd. We will work together and learn from one another as we move from the four foundations of mindfulness to meditation practices that include: mindfulness of the body; mindfulness of feelings, thoughts, and emotions; and mindfulness of heart qualities, including lovingkindness. We will wrap up the program with a discussion of how to use these meditation practices in the challenging world we are living in today.

Each class will have a talk, meditation practice period, and a time for questions and responses. There will be optional homework each week to deepen participants' practices in between sessions.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This series is free and being offered by Maura Flanagan as her practicum in the Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program (MMTCP). These classes will be recorded so that her mentor can evaluate her teaching capabilities. These recordings will only be viewed by her mentor. After you have registered, Maura will send you a consent form to ensure that you are fully aware the course is being recorded for her evaluation. While life can happen, and we understand that, we hope you can join Maura for all four sessions and complete an evaluation following the series so that Maura and her mentor can receive your feedback on the offering and learn ways she can improve her teaching skills. Your feedback is valued and very much appreciated!!!

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] This Sunday at Downtown Dharma: Haiku, Creativity, and Dharma

Dear sangha,

This Sunday at 7pm, we'll gather to meditate and relate. I look forward to offering a peer-led session inspired by the Zen haiku masters and how this Buddhism-adjacent artform has evolved around the globe since it began in 1600s Japan. After some mingling and a 25-minute sit, I'll share some haiku (and some haiku history) to discuss how art and creative expression can bring us into the moment and vice versa. Then, we'll open it up to group conversations around the intersection of art, creativity, and dharma in our own lives.

Hope to see you there!

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] 3 offerings in May: posture, psyche, learning & interconnectivity

Dear Friends,

I'm very excited to lead a meditation practice at Downtown Dharma for the first time on Sunday May 24! I will send more details closer to that date, but I can tell you that we will be exploring the intersection of posture, psyche and learning in the development of a meditation practice. My provisional title is Upright Sitting & Beginner's Mind.

In the meanwhile, I'm offering the Musicality of Being workshop twice this month - this Saturday and on Saturday May 23, the day before I'll be at Downtown Dharma. On both dates, we meet for 3 hours (10am-1pm) and walk the trails of Rock Creek Park together, exploring the connection between our inner and outer worlds and tuning into the reality that everything is connected.

If you are curious about my offering at Downtown Dharma, I think you would also love the Musicality of Being and I want to invite you to consider connecting the dots between the two. Learn more about Musicality of Being and register for this Saturday or the 23rd right here.

If you have any questions about any of the events, please feel free to contact me directly.

Warmly,
Seth Dellinger

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Small groups at Downtown Dharma

Hi friends,

At Downtown Dharma, small groups are a way to continue the practice outside of our Sunday night gatherings. They often meet in homes and with others who live nearby, and offer space to meditate together and share reflections on daily life.

We’ve started a shared doc to map the peer-led groups already connected to this community. This is a work in progress, but gives a sense of what’s out there—and will get even better as more small groups are included:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JSuFNci46EGD8z0AgiGH_BCgSjddQhlPhob2emQfts0/edit?usp=sharing

If you’re part of a small group not yet mentioned—or if anything needs updating—please feel free to add or edit a row.

If you’re not currently part of a group, you’re welcome to explore. And if nothing feels like a fit, you might consider gathering a few others and starting something new. Most existing groups began just this way.

With love,
Vince

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Special Invitation: Join Us this September for a Weekend Retreat at Seven Oaks

Greetings Dear Sangha,

Dechen Ellen McSweeney and I will co-teach a weekend retreat at Seven Oaks Retreat Center from Friday, September 18 through Sunday, September 20. While open to the public, we wanted to extend a special invitation to the Downtown Dharma Community.

The theme of the retreat is attending to relationship: with ourselves, one another, and our worlds. Rather than an exclusively silent retreat, we will undertake a mix of practices: silent meditation, dialogue, group sharing, and conversation with the land. Yet Saturday in particular will be held in noble silence as a means of developing relationship with ourselves and the land. Learn more here.

Registration opens May 21. These retreats tend to fill so we encourage you to mark both the retreat dates and the registration date on your calendar.

With appreciation,
Kristin & Ellen

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] This Sunday Evening - The Potency of Proximity

Mindfulness is a miracle.

Zen master Thích Nhất Hạnh characterized our core practice as nothing short of a "miracle" to clarify the surprising power of simply noticing what is happening right now with non-judgmental awareness

One way to tune further into this power, to refine our skill, is to ask, "How close? When we are triggered and come too close to our immediate experience, we can get captured or even overwhelmed. Yet when we are numbed out or seeking escape, so much can be gained by just coming a little bit closer.

What wisdom and guidance might we discover by finding the most helpful distance? How might this illuminate what is underway not just within ourselves, but with one another, our communities, and this aching world?  This Sunday, we'll explore a refined form of mindfulness by practicing with proximity.

I hope you can join us in-person or online as your situation allows.

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] This Sunday at Downtown Dharma: Finding peace in a world ever in flux

Dear beloved sangha,

This Sunday at 7:00 pm we'll gather to practice with finding our true selves in this world of impermanence and change.

The Buddha taught that: all things are impermanent, this impermanence causes suffering, and heartfelt opening up to our interconnectedness can end our suffering. Our spiritual practices--like meditating in community--give us the strength to find comfort and happiness amidst the neverending ups and downs of our lives.

We’ll do some mingling; meditate; I’ll share some reflections from a zen perspective on finding our true selves in an ever-changing world; and, we’ll have small group conversations. Plus, everyone gets a surprise party favor to bring home!

This is a wonderful opportunity to gather in spiritual community and make new friends. Come join!

🙏🏻♥️
